PINKERTONS IMAGE

This image shows the Pinkertons after they surrendered to the strikers.  Imagine that you are one of the people living in Homestead, Pennsylvania.

How do you feel about the strikers after seeing what happened to the Pinkertons?  Do you support the Labor Union?  Why or why not?

  1. I feel that the strikers are cruel and were harsh to the Pinkertons. I do not support the labor union because this is not what a labor union is supposed to be like. I think that labor unions should be like the IWW and strike peacefully instead of attacking the opposers but still getting what they want. Therefore, I do not support the Labor Union.

  2. I feel that the were like hijackers because they took over a factory while armed. When the Pinkertons showed up, they fired at them. The Pinkertons were largely outnumbered forcing them to surrender, I don't support them because they are violent to people who are just trying to do their jobs.

  3. The strikers were not peaceful or calm when the Pinkertons arrived. They were peacefully protesting but then they decided to take over the factory, which was not a good move in the long run. I understand they had been mistreated and were trying to support for their families, but opening fire on the Pinkertons was a step too far. I don't support them because they were violent and could not control themselves.

  4. I think that what the striker/workers did was the right thing to do at the time and place of that certain situation. I would have don the exact same thing if I was told that my wages were going to be cut in half. The only thing I don't support 100% of is the violence that was involved. I support the rest of what the Labor union did.

  5. I feel that the strikers should have acted in a calmer manner. They opened fire on the Pinkertons first, causing them to have the blame on their shoulders. The Pinkertons were on a job to stop the strikers but the strikers just went on and fired first. Thirty six people were killed in the process of this fight which is pretty upsetting. I do not support the labor union at all because they are putting people in danger. Like I said before, they fired first at the Pinkertons, hence, the blame is on them.

  6. Caroline S- I use to feel bad for them(strikers) having poor working condtions, but I don't anymore. I feel bad for the Pinkertons as shown they were out numbered by the strikers. If the strikers settled down and didn't shoot first I have no clue who I would feel bad for. I know the workers are mad and need money to pay for their families but in the end it would not be the right thing to do.

  7. I feel that the strikers should not have attacked the Pinkertons in such a brutal way. They could have easily played the victim card and waited for the Pinkertons to attack them first, but instead they were the ones blamed for the event. Like all of the public, I do not support the Labor Union because they were at fault for starting the battle, which caused many casualties. Also, the Pinkertons were hired to take back the factory and were not necessarily looking for a fight. Many people knew someone in the Pinkertons and were devastated to hear of the deaths and injuries. In conclusion, the strikers should have peacefully protested instead of taking over the factory and instigating violence.

  8. I think that the strikers should not have harmed the Pinkertons. By doing that, they automatically lose the publics support. The strikers could have waited for the Pinkertons to make the first act of violence but instead they started. With the Pinkertons being the victims in this scenario, the public automatically felt bad for them. Once the public heard of the deaths and injuries caused to the Pinkertons, they were against the Labor Unions.I feel badly for the Pinkertons and feel like the strikers should have handled that problem in a calmer manner.

  9. William B. - The strikers had terrible working conditions and were paid little so at first I felt bad for them. But when they attacked the Pinkerton, I was so mad at them for doing so. They think they will get what they want by killing people, just look what happened to the Molly Maguires. They may have gotten better pay and working conditions if they didn't attack anyone and peacefully protested. If the Pinkertons had attacked them they would have gotten what they wanted like the wobblies did. Violence is never the answer but it does teach valuable lessons.

  10. Brian Mason- I felt bad for the Pinkertons they were hired to try to stop the stikers and they got attacked they didn't know what they were getting themselves into. I don't feel like the stikers did the right thing because now the Pinkertons get to play the victim card and the strikers are the people who everyone hates.

  11. Jessie G- After seeing what happened to the Pinkertons I felt bad for them. I feel like the strikers were intending for violence. They were intending to take back the factory, but, the Union workers attacked them first. The strikers should of striked peacefully instead of violently. I don't like the way the Union workers attacked the Pinkertons, the Pinkertons weren't doing anything wrong (right them) . I understand why the Union workers attacked because they weren't get high wages, good working conditions, and less hours. I would support the labor Union if they striked peacefully. But, since they didn't I don't support them.

I feel that the strikers were wrong. Why would they start that fight? They should have realized that good come from picking a fight with Andrew Carnigie. Also why would I side with people who just shoot everyone? What if the people on the boat weren’t the Pinkertons, they were, but what if they weren’t.
